I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to see a fun, youthfully chaotic indie movie be made based on the beginnings of a grocery store, but reading this article about Glut’s founding is incredibly inspiring. Starting out as a buyer’s club, a group of houses that banded together to buy groceries in bulk, Glut quickly grew to become a neighborhood co-op. You’ll find a wide selection of spices, herbs, grains, nuts, oils, and sauces in bulk quantities here. If you bring your own clean container, you can reduce the single-use packaging in your home and save money while doing it!

So conveniently located by the Eastern Market metro stop, Mason & Greens is a beautifully curated zero-waste store. When I first visited the store in June 2022, I was stunned by their impressive selection and layout of the store. It is on the pricier end of the zero-waste stores in the area, but the items are of an amazing quality. I was especially surprised and impressed to find items such as tofu, vegan hot dogs, and gummy vitamins without packaging! Very rare finds in DC and absolutely deserving of a visit and a wander through the store.

This store is a super neat blend between vintage and new, with the screen printers selling their “dead stock” (what never sold) t-shirts and sweaters from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. So they are unworn retro pieces. Super neat. Because the sweaters have polyester in them, you can opt for the cotton t-shirts for a plastic-free thoroughly DC item. Browse through campaign shirts, capital-inspired designs, and ever-relevant and -relatable comic prints

My jaw dropped when I first came across this store. I cannot tell you how many friends and family members I’ve monologued to, ranting about the issue of unnecessary elastics and polyesters in feminine fashion, so this ethically sourced silk and bamboo handmade knit store is a blessing for us all. Enjoy scrolling through these knitted bras, crop tops, camis, and sweaters, and get them for yourself or a love of yours, if not shoot the url to an eco-conscious fem friend who would also love this.

If you would like an embroidered DC-themed wall hanging or a floral Christmas tree ornament, browse through this Etsy store that has a plethora of customizable gifts for yourself or a friend. I think her Cherry Blossomed outlined DC is a really brilliant and simple way to capture the capital’s spring spirit. I just had to give that item specifically a shout-out. I really love it.
